Sharing a solo ride
01Start sharing before you mount
Open Holler, start the share and send the link while you're standing next to the horse with both feet on the ground. Setting up a phone in the saddle is a distraction you don't need, especially on a fresh horse.
02Carry the phone on you
A saddle bag goes wherever the horse goes. Use a zipped jacket pocket, a leg or arm pouch, or a body-worn bag. If you come off and the horse bolts, the phone needs to be on the ground with you so you can call and so your Guardian sees where you are, not where the horse ran.
03Give your Guardian the details a rescuer needs
Tell them the trails or fields you'll use, where the trailer is parked, and your horse's color, markings and name. A loose horse is often found before the rider, and knowing where it came from speeds up the search.
04Set a return time with room for a slow ride
Rides often run long: a thrown shoe, a nervous horse at a bridge, a detour. Set the return time for when you'll be back at the barn, with a cushion. If you haven't checked in five minutes after it, Holler's server sends your Guardians an overdue alert, even if your phone has no signal.
05Add a stationary alert for falls
Falls are the main risk for solo riders. Holler's optional stationary alert asks "Are you OK?" if you stop moving for the time you choose and alerts Guardians if you don't answer. Pick a time longer than a rest stop or a gate. It only helps if the phone is on your body.
06End the share when the horse is put away
Stop sharing when you're back and the horse is settled. Your Guardian sees that the share ended and knows you're in.
