A Road ID app alternative with a live link and return time
Holler is a free-during-beta alternative for Road ID app users who want a private live link and an optional return-time check-in. The former Road ID app is now SafeBeacon. Choose based on how you share, which alerts your contacts need and how you carry your phone. Holler works in a phone browser today; its native iPhone app is in private beta.
This page is written by the Holler team. It explains how to try our setup and where another option may fit better.
Start with the job you used the old app for
If your main habit was sending a link before a run, the decision is about preserving that habit with a setup your contact understands. If you depended on a particular notification channel or locked-phone behavior, those requirements deserve their own check before you change anything.
SafeBeacon identifies itself as the renamed Road ID app, operated by SafeSignal. Its help page says existing accounts continue there. Holler is a separate service: create a new setup and review your Guardian list rather than expecting another provider's account or contacts to appear automatically.
Keep the rebrand question separate from the switching decision. A new name on an installed app does not by itself mean that you need to replace it. First write down the feature or experience you want to change.
The Holler setup you can try
A private link for the people you choose
Guardians can open your live link in a browser without an app or account. Ask them to confirm access from the phone they will actually use. A link can be forwarded, so share it with the intended people and keep it out of public posts.
A return time saved before the outing
Choose when you expect to be back and confirm the time saves. If you have not checked in five minutes after it, the server sends selected Guardians an overdue alert. The saved deadline can still be processed if the phone stops reporting; it cannot create fresh location data from a dead phone.
An intentional request for help
Manual SOS notifies your Guardians with location information. They still need to receive it and respond. Holler does not contact emergency services. If immediate emergency help is needed, make that call directly.
A browser option with a clear limit
You can start using the phone browser during the free beta without a card. Continuous browser sharing needs the page open and screen on. If your requirement is a native app used with a locked phone, check the current iPhone private-beta availability first.
Reasons to keep your current setup
SafeBeacon documents text or email notifications, browser viewing for contacts and a stationary-alert workflow. If those are the features you already use successfully, changing services is not automatically an improvement. Compare your actual routine rather than the length of a feature list.
SMS is unavailable in Holler today. Its alert channels are email and supported app or browser push. Message delivery can be delayed or missed. Do not promise your contact that enabling push will make every alert immediate, or that viewing the map has automatically enabled notifications.
A return-time alert and a stationary alert answer different questions. The first is about failing to check in by a deadline; the second is about a period without movement and an unanswered prompt. Select the behavior you need and discuss what the recipient should do with it.
Move the routine over one step at a time
1. Create your own Holler setup
Sign in and add the people you want as Guardians. Recheck names and contact details instead of relying on a remembered list. Let each person know that a new service will be involved before sending the first outing.
2. Agree on the next outing
Tell your contact the route, expected finish and way you will confirm completion. Ask whether they can be available. If they cannot, arrange someone else before treating the plan as ready.
3. Save a realistic return time
Work out the whole outing, including the trip back to your finish point. The planner can help with an estimate, but you must save the chosen time in the outing itself. Do not confuse a calculated time with an active alert.
4. Practice on an ordinary outing
Confirm the live link opens, look at the update time and check how you will end the share. Record what worked on the actual phones. Use the practice to identify setup problems before a longer outing.
Keep the switch separate from account and subscription decisions
Trying a different service does not mean your existing subscription has ended. If you decide to stop paying another provider, review the subscription with that provider or the store that manages it. Do not delete an account just to test a new sharing routine.
For an illustrative first outing, choose a familiar loop and tell your contact which link is the one to use. If you are comparing two services, label them clearly and agree on a single response plan. Otherwise, a contact can mistake one service ending for confirmation that every check-in is complete.
Afterward, discuss the specific observations: whether the invitation was recognized, whether the map opened, whether the update time was understandable and whether the finish was clear. Resolve those questions before making the new arrangement part of a longer or less familiar trip.
Questions
Is Holler a free Road ID app alternative?
Holler is free during beta and does not require a card to start. That describes the current beta, not a promise about every future plan. Check current availability and the features your outing needs before switching.
Is the Road ID app now called SafeBeacon?
Yes. SafeBeacon's own help page identifies it as the renamed Road ID app. Holler is a separate product, so setting it up does not transfer or cancel an account with SafeBeacon.
Will my Guardians need a new app?
They can view a Holler live link without installing an app or creating an account. Notifications are a separate part of the setup, so confirm the channels they expect to use.
Can I replace text alerts with Holler?
SMS alerts are not available in Holler. If texts are central to your existing arrangement, account for that before switching. Email and supported push are different delivery channels with their own settings.
Should I switch if I already record workouts in Strava?
Start with the outcome you want. A workout link may meet a progress-viewing need. A missed-return prompt requires a check-in arrangement. Use the comparison pages to decide which part of your current routine, if any, needs another tool.
