Apps like Road ID for runners and cyclists
The Road ID app, now called SafeBeacon, did one job well: it let someone at home follow your run or ride and told them if you stopped. Several apps cover that job today, some free and some built into devices you already own.
Here is how they differ. Pick based on who needs to follow you, whether you own a Garmin or Apple Watch, and whether you want a person or a monitoring center to respond.
The options
Holler (free)
A private live link your Guardians open in any browser, SOS to your Guardians, and a return-time check-in with a server-side overdue alert. Works in a phone browser; iPhone app in private beta. No SMS, crash detection or monitored dispatch.
SafeBeacon ($5.99/mo or $49.99/yr)
The renamed Road ID app. Live tracking, text alerts to contacts, a stationary alert after about five minutes and a phone-dialer 911 button. A mature App Store app.
Strava Beacon (free in the Strava app)
Live location for up to three contacts while you record in Strava, updated about every 15 seconds. No alerts on its own.
Garmin LiveTrack (free with a Garmin)
A browser link to follow your activity, plus incident detection on supported watches and bike computers that alerts your contacts after a hard impact.
Apple Check In, Emergency SOS and Fall Detection (built in)
Check In tells an iPhone friend if you are late. Crash and Fall Detection on supported devices can call 911 for you.
Noonlight (paid monitoring)
A panic button backed by a 24/7 monitoring center that can send 911. The monitored plans are paid.
Life360 (free tier, paid memberships)
Always-on family location with driving features. Built for households, not a single run.
Cairn (hiking)
Trip plans, a safety circle with overdue alerts, and crowd-sourced cell coverage maps for the backcountry.
How to choose
Your people do not have iPhones
Pick something with a browser link: Holler, SafeBeacon, Strava Beacon or Garmin LiveTrack.
You want impact detection
Use a device: Apple Watch Fall Detection or Garmin incident detection. No phone-only app on this list does impact sensing well.
You want a professional to respond
Only Noonlight's paid plans, Garmin inReach and Apple's automatic 911 calls reach emergency services without a friend in the loop.
You do not want to pay
Holler, Strava Beacon, Garmin LiveTrack and Apple's built-in tools are free. Holler is the only free option here with an overdue alert your whole circle receives.
Questions
What is the best free app like Road ID?
It depends on your gear. With a Garmin, LiveTrack and incident detection are free. If you record in Strava, Beacon is free. If you want a browser link plus SOS and an overdue alert without extra hardware, Holler is free.
Is Road ID the same as SafeBeacon?
The Road ID app is SafeBeacon now. Road ID the bracelet company is a separate business that still sells ID bracelets.
Which app calls 911 automatically if I crash?
Apple's Crash Detection and Fall Detection can call emergency services on supported devices, and Noonlight's paid plans route to a monitoring center. Holler, Strava Beacon and Garmin LiveTrack alert your contacts, not 911.
