How do you share your live location while bike commuting?
To share your live location while bike commuting, start a share on your phone as you leave, send the link to whoever expects you, and end it when you arrive. With Holler, your Guardian opens a private live link in any browser without an app or account. For daily commutes, a return time is often more useful than someone watching a map: if you don't check in by the time you should be home, your Guardian gets an overdue alert.
Step by step
01Pick who you're sharing with
Most commuters share with one person: a partner, parent or roommate who knows your usual arrival time. Add them as a Guardian in Holler so they get alerts by email and push.
02Start the share as you unlock your bike
Make starting the share part of your routine, like turning on your lights. Open Holler before you unlock the bike, start the share and the link goes to your Guardians. Doing it while you're still standing in the bike room or at the rack, with good signal, means your first position is on the map before you roll.
03Set a return time for the ride home
A return time does the watching for your Guardian. Set it for a few minutes after you'd normally arrive. If you haven't checked in five minutes after it, Holler's server sends them an overdue alert, even if your phone app is closed.
04Keep the phone mounted or zipped away
Don't ride holding your phone. Use a bar mount for navigation or keep the phone in a jacket pocket or bag. If you share from a phone browser, leave the Holler page open so your position keeps updating.
05End the share when you arrive
Stop sharing when you're home or at work. This keeps your commute routine private and makes each share meaningful. A Guardian who sees a share end knows you've arrived.
Related questions
Is sharing my location every day a privacy risk?
Holler links are private and only go to the Guardians you choose. You share only while an outing is active, not around the clock. Ending the share when you arrive keeps your location private the rest of the day.
What if I stop for errands on the way home?
Extend your return time or check in when you stop. That way the overdue alert won't go off while you're in a store. If you've turned on a stationary alert, pick a time longer than a typical stop.
Can I share without my Guardian installing anything?
Yes. Your Guardian opens the link in any web browser on their phone or computer. They can also choose push notifications in the browser. The bike commuter page covers a full commute setup.
What about night commutes in winter?
Dark rides home are where sharing helps most. Combine the live link with a return time and good lights. Our night bike commuting guide covers lights, routes and visibility.
What does my Guardian see on the live page?
Your route so far as a line, your latest position and how long ago it updated. On a regular commute they'll quickly learn your usual line, so a detour or a long stop stands out. If an alert arrives, they should call you, then call 911 with your last known location if you don't answer. The live location sharing explainer covers the details.
