Is SafeBeacon the Road ID app?
Yes. SafeBeacon is the app that used to be called ROAD iD: Run + Ride Safety. It was renamed in early 2026, kept the same App Store listing (id 1588616662), and is now operated by SafeSignal Inc. SafeBeacon's own site calls itself "Formerly Road ID App" and says your login, emergency contacts and subscription carried over. It is not the same as Road ID the bracelet company, which is a separate business that still sells engraved IDs.
How to confirm it and tell them apart
01Check the App Store listing
Search for SafeBeacon: Safety Tracker. The seller is SafeSignal Inc, and the version history notes that "ROAD iD: Run + Ride Safety App is now SafeBeacon." If you see a different developer name, it is not the original app.
02Sign in with your old account
You don't need a new account. SafeBeacon's help page says your existing ROAD iD account still works if you sign in with the same email address, and your subscription transferred automatically.
03Separate the app from the bracelets
Roadid.com sells wrist, shoe and watch-band IDs and an online iD PROFILE, and no longer lists an app. Old roadid.com app pages now redirect to safebeacon.com. A bracelet works with no phone at all, which is why many people keep one either way.
04Know what SafeBeacon does today
Its site describes live tracking that updates every minute, a tracking link your contacts open in a browser, alerts sent by text or email, an automatic stationary alert after five minutes without movement, and an SOS button that lets you call 911. As of September 28, 2026, the App Store lists in-app subscriptions of $5.99 a month and $49.99 a year, plus a $29.99 annual item.
05Compare before you renew
If you're weighing whether to keep paying, look at what you actually use. Our Holler vs SafeBeacon comparison sets the features side by side, and the page on free Road ID app alternatives covers other options, including Strava Beacon, Garmin LiveTrack and Check In on iPhone.
Related questions
Is SafeBeacon the official Road ID app or a copy?
It is the original app under a new name, not a copy. It kept the same App Store listing and existing accounts, and SafeBeacon describes itself as the new owner of the ROAD iD app.
Why is the app called SafeBeacon now?
The app changed hands. SafeBeacon's welcome page says it is "the new owner of the ROAD iD app" and that it is the same app with the same safety features and a new name. The Road ID bracelet business stayed separate and did not take the app with it.
Is SafeBeacon free?
The download is free, but the service is sold as an in-app subscription. The App Store listing shows $5.99 monthly and $49.99 annual plans as of September 28, 2026. Free options include Holler, Strava Beacon in the Strava app, Garmin LiveTrack with a Garmin device, and Check In between iPhones.
How is Holler different from SafeBeacon?
Holler is free and starts from your phone's browser. Guardians open your live location link with no app or account, you can send them an SOS, and an optional return time sends an overdue alert from Holler's server if you haven't checked in five minutes after it, even if your phone is off. SafeBeacon is a mature App Store app that can alert contacts by text. Holler has no text alerts yet, and its iPhone app is still in private beta.
