How can you share your location without being tracked all the time?

Share for a fixed window, not forever. Most location tools let you pick a duration: Apple's Find My and Messages offer an hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely, and Google Maps lets you choose how long to share. Apple's Check In goes further and only shares your details if you don't arrive as expected. Outing-based safety apps share only while your run, ride or hike is active.

How to share only when it matters

01Pick the shortest duration that covers your outing

When you start sharing in Find My or Messages on iPhone, choose one hour or until the end of the day rather than indefinitely. In Google Maps, choose a set duration when you create the share. A 90 minute run doesn't need all-day sharing.

02Use a check-in that shares only if something's wrong

Apple's Check In in Messages notifies a friend when you arrive or when a timer ends. Apple says Check In doesn't automatically share your location; details are shared only if there's an unexpected delay. It needs iOS 17 or later on both phones, so it only works when both of you use iPhones.

03Use per-outing sharing for exercise

Safety apps built for workouts tie sharing to an activity. In Holler, you start an outing and your Guardians get a live location link for that outing. When you end it, live updates stop. Nothing runs between outings, so no one sees where you go the rest of the day.

04Rely on a timer rather than constant watching

A return time means your contact doesn't need to stare at a map. If you haven't checked in five minutes after your return time, Holler's server sends your Guardians an overdue alert. The rest of the time, they can ignore the link completely.

05Review who can see you

Every few months, open your phone's location sharing lists and remove anyone you've forgotten about. Old family shares and past trip companions tend to pile up. Our guide on what to tell someone before a run covers what one trusted person actually needs.

Related questions

Is sharing for a single run enough to be safe?

For most outings, yes. The risk you're covering is something going wrong while you're out, so sharing during the outing plus a return time covers it. Continuous tracking adds little safety for a runner and costs a lot of privacy.

How do I check who can see my location right now?

On iPhone, open Find My and look at the People list, then stop sharing with anyone who no longer needs it. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Location sharing, to see active shares and links. In Holler, live sharing stops when you end the outing, so there is nothing to check between runs.

Can my contact still see my last location after I stop sharing?

That depends on the service. With time-limited sharing, the contact generally loses your live location when the window ends. If privacy matters to you, check the settings of the tool you use and end sharing manually when you get home.

What if I forget to start sharing before I leave?

Make it part of your routine, like lacing your shoes. Many runners start the share at the door and end it when they get back. If you forget, a quick message saying your route and when you'll be back is better than nothing.
