Return Time Calculator for Runs, Rides and Hikes
Estimate when you might finish a run, ride or hike, then agree when your contact should follow up if you have not checked in. Enter the route details and review the result together. This calculator prepares a plan: it does not start an outing, save a return time or send alerts. If you want an automatic overdue alert, save your chosen return time in Holler separately.
Choose an allowance for this outing and agree the follow-up with your contact. It is not a required wait in an emergency or an app alert setting.
Enter a positive distance, a valid pace such as 9:30 or a ride speed, and zero or positive uphill gain.
The estimate uses your distance and pace, or speed for a ride, plus a simple climbing allowance. It does not assess the route, weather or your condition. Known stops and uncertainty still need to be accounted for.
Understand the two times in the result
The estimated finish comes from the numbers you entered. The follow-up time adds the extra planning allowance you selected. It is a prompt for a conversation with your contact, not a prediction that anything before it is safe or anything after it is an emergency.
Use a pace or speed appropriate to this outing, not a personal best. Check the distance unit and total uphill gain. If you have a planned break, account for it when deciding on the time you will actually agree. A calculated travel estimate does not know that you intend to stop for lunch.
Worked examples using the current calculator
These are arithmetic illustrations, not recommended paces, buffers or emergency thresholds. The examples use one device's local time and do not cross midnight.
| Outing inputs | Estimated travel time | Estimated finish | Follow-up after selected allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run: 6 mi, 10:00 per mi, no climb, 6:00 p.m. start, 30 min allowance | 60 min | 7:00 p.m. | 7:30 p.m. |
| Hike: 4 mi, 25:00 per mi, 1,000 ft climb, 9:00 a.m. start, 45 min allowance | 130 min | 11:10 a.m. | 11:55 a.m. |
| Ride: 30 mi, 15 mph, no climb, noon start, 30 min allowance | 120 min | 2:00 p.m. | 2:30 p.m. |
Keep the planning allowance separate from an overdue alert
Suppose your calculated finish is 7:00 p.m. and you agree a 7:30 p.m. follow-up. Those are decisions in your written plan. They have not been saved as an alert by this page.
If you separately save 7:30 p.m. as the return time in Holler, its five-minute grace period means the plan becomes overdue at 7:35 p.m. if you have not checked in. That is an eligibility time, not a promise that the notification will arrive at that exact moment. Do not silently add the allowance and grace period together without explaining the resulting timing to your contact.
Choose which return time to save deliberately. For the broader distinction, read live tracking versus a safety check-in. If immediate help is needed, the person or their contact should act without waiting for any of these times.
Turn the estimate into a real outing plan
Send your contact the route, the expected finish and the way you will confirm completion. Ask them to acknowledge the plan and say whether they can be available. The Guardian guide explains that role.
Then start an outing in Holler, choose the Guardians and save the return time you agreed. Confirm that it saved before departure. This link opens signup; the calculator values are not transferred automatically. If plans change, update the saved time while connected and tell your contact what changed.
Questions people ask
Does this calculator set an automatic alert?
No. It produces an estimate and a message you can copy. Start an outing and save a return time separately if you want Holler to process an overdue check-in.
How much extra time should I allow?
Base the decision on your route, expected stops and uncertainty, and agree it with your contact. The dropdown values are choices, not safety recommendations. Do not treat an allowance as a reason to delay responding to an emergency.
How is climbing included?
The current calculator adds a rough allowance of 60 minutes per 2,000 feet or 600 metres uphill for foot activities, and half that for rides. This describes its implemented arithmetic, not a validated prediction for every terrain or rider. Descents and conditions need separate judgment.
Does the result include stops or changing weather?
The calculation uses the inputs on the form. It does not fetch weather or inspect the route. Review the estimate and account for planned breaks and conditions when agreeing the actual outing time.
What should my contact do if I miss the follow-up?
They should try to reach you and use the route and response plan you agreed. If there is an immediate emergency, contact emergency services promptly. No calculator output creates a mandatory waiting period.
