What should you do if a dog chases you while cycling?

If a dog chases your bike, stay upright first: do not swerve wildly or look back for long. If the road ahead is clear and the dog is still some way off, a steady ride away often ends it at the edge of its territory. If it is close, stop, get off and keep the bike between you and the dog while you speak firmly. Walk away slowly once it loses interest. Get any bite checked.

On the bike

01Hold your line

The biggest risk in a dog chase on a bike is often the crash, not the bite. A dog running into your front wheel or a panicked swerve into traffic can put you on the ground. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the bars, and avoid turning your head for long.

02Decide quickly: ride on or stop

Many dogs chase to the end of their yard and then stop. If you have a clear road and the dog is not yet at your wheel, ride steadily on without sprinting into danger. If it is already beside you, the road is busy, or you are grinding up a climb where it will easily keep pace, slow down safely and stop. If you ride clipless, unclip one foot as soon as you decide to stop, so you are not tipping over with a dog at your ankle.

03Put the bike between you

Once stopped, get off on the side away from the dog so the bike is a barrier. Stand still, avoid staring at the dog, and say "No" or "Go home" in a deep, firm voice. The CDC recommends staying calm and still and avoiding direct eye contact with an unfamiliar dog.

04Walk the bike away

When the dog backs off, walk slowly away with the bike still between you. Remount once you are well clear. Riding off too soon can restart the chase.

05Treat any bite properly

The CDC's rabies guidance is to wash a bite with soap and water for 15 minutes. See a healthcare provider if the wound is deep, becomes infected, the dog's rabies vaccination status is unknown, or your last tetanus shot was over five years ago. Ask the owner for their name and address, or photograph the dog and note the road and nearest house number, then report it to animal control. On a long ride, cut the route short rather than riding on with an open wound.

How can I tell a dog is serious rather than just barking?

The ASPCA lists bared teeth, growling, lunging, a stiff body with ears forward and a hard stare as warning signs. A dog running flat out at an angle to cut you off is committed to the chase. Loose, bouncy barking at the fence line usually ends at the property edge.

Does spraying water at a dog work?

A squirt from your bottle may surprise some dogs and buy you a moment, but it is not reliable, and reaching for a bottle while riding near a dog can cause a crash. Only try it once you are stopped.

What if a dog causes me to crash?

Get clear of the road, check yourself for injuries, and call 911 if you are badly hurt. Holler's crash detection (beta) may start an "Are you OK?" countdown after a hard fall, but it can miss crashes, so tap SOS yourself if you need a Guardian to come. Your Guardian sees your location on the live link and the route you rode to get there. See what to do after a bike crash.

How can I avoid problem dogs on regular routes?

Note houses where dogs roam loose and plan around them, and report repeat problems to animal control. Riding with others on rural roads helps too. The cycling safety hub has more route ideas.
