What happens if your phone dies during location sharing?

If your phone dies during location sharing, ordinary app updates stop and your contact may see only the last location sent. In Holler, that point remains visible with its update time. A return time saved beforehand can still lead to a server-generated overdue alert, but it cannot produce a fresh position from a dead phone. Agree on your route, return time and contact plan before leaving so an old map pin is not the only information available.

What stops, what can continue and what to do

01Read the last-update time with the map pin

A visible point does not mean the phone is still sending data. If the phone lost power after its last successful update, the person may have continued beyond that place. Holler retains the last known location and shows how old it is. A stale update alone does not tell a Guardian whether the cause was battery, signal, permissions or something else.

02Separate the live map from a saved deadline

A phone needs power and a connection to send new app location updates. A deadline already saved on a service can be evaluated elsewhere. In Holler, a saved return time becomes overdue after the five-minute grace period if you have not checked in, even if the phone app is closed. That depends on the plan having reached the server and the service processing it; email or push delivery can still be delayed or missed.

03Use a timeline to understand the difference

Here is a hypothetical example. You successfully save a 7:00 p.m. return time before setting out. Your last location upload is at 6:40 p.m., and the phone loses power at 6:42 p.m. The map cannot show where you go next. If you have not checked in, the plan becomes eligible for an overdue alert after the grace period ends at 7:05 p.m. The older location can help your contact, but the alert does not turn it into a current position or promise delivery at that exact second.

04Give your Guardian information outside the app

Share the route and return details before departure, and confirm someone is available to respond. The safety contact guide explains how to agree that responsibility. If you are overdue and unreachable, your contact should act on the circumstances and the plan instead of simply waiting for the map to refresh. If there is evidence of an immediate emergency, contact emergency services without waiting for an app notification.

05Treat low battery as a reason to update the plan early

While you still have power and a connection, tell your contact if the outing or expected finish changes. Confirm that any revised return time saved successfully. If the phone has already died, use another available phone to let them know you are safe when you can. Sending an ordinary message and ending an app outing are different actions; make sure your contact knows which has happened.

06Prepare for the next outing with the same phone setup

Charge the phone, check location permissions and practise sharing on a short ordinary outing. For browser sharing, understand what happens when the page is no longer open or the screen turns off. The battery-use answer covers the factors to consider. There is no single battery-life figure here because the phone, connection and way you use it all matter.

Can a powered-off iPhone still appear in Find My?

On supported iPhones with Find My network enabled, Apple offers device-finding capability after shutdown. That is a separate system from an ordinary app sending live updates. It does not mean a Holler link will receive new positions from a phone that has died.

Can Pixel Safety Check continue after the phone turns off?

Google says an active Safety Check remains in place when the phone turns off or loses signal and starts Emergency sharing with the last known location at the scheduled check-in time. Check feature availability on your Pixel. This does not mean the powered-off phone sends fresh locations.

Will my Guardian know that the battery is definitely dead?

A stale Holler location is not a diagnosis. It shows that fresh information has not arrived, not why. Your Guardian should use the update time, your outing details and attempts to contact you together, rather than assuming either that you are fine or that the map proves an emergency.

Can Holler send an SOS from a dead phone?

You cannot start a new manual SOS from a phone without power. A return time saved earlier is different because the deadline is held by the server. Holler alerts Guardians and does not contact emergency services; a person still needs to respond to the situation.
