How do you stay safe mountain biking with no cell service?

To mountain bike safely where there's no cell service, set things up at the trailhead: tell someone which trails you're riding and when you'll be out, start any live location sharing while you still have signal, and download the trail network map. Carry a repair kit, first aid and a layer so a mechanical or crash doesn't strand you. For remote trail systems, a satellite messenger or satellite-capable phone is the only reliable way to call for help.

Step by step

01Download the trail network map

Trail apps can save offline maps that show your position using GPS. Download the whole network, not just your planned loop. Unmarked trails and closures are easier to handle when you can see alternatives.

02Tell someone your trails and finish time

Name the trail system, the trails you plan to ride and where you parked. Give a finish time with room for a flat or two. Agree on when your contact should call for help.

03Start Holler at the trailhead

Start a live link while you have signal and set a return time. In the dead zone, updates stop and your Guardians see your last known location and the trails you rode before it. Crash detection (beta) depends on your phone reaching Holler's server, so the return time is your real backstop there: the server sends an overdue alert if you haven't checked in five minutes after it.

04Carry what lets you ride or walk out

Without signal, you're your own rescue for mechanicals. Plugs, a tube, a pump, a chain tool and a quick link fix most problems. A first aid kit and a warm layer matter more when help is far away.

05Carry a satellite option on remote trails

A satellite messenger fits in a hip pack and can send SOS from open terrain. iPhone 14 and later can text emergency services via satellite, but Apple says dense foliage, hills and steep terrain can block the connection. If you crash in the trees, you may need to reach a clearing first. Test it in the open before you need it.

06Ride a little more conservatively

Without quick help, a crash costs more. Session a tricky feature on a day you have signal or company, and walk what you're unsure of when alone. See our answer on falling while mountain biking alone.

Related questions

Does crash detection work without signal?

The phone can sense a crash, but it can't tell anyone without a connection unless it has a satellite feature. Holler's crash detection (beta) is opt-in, can miss real crashes, and needs your phone to reach the server to notify Guardians. Set a return time as your backstop.

Can I find signal on the trail?

Often on high points, open ridges or near the trailhead. If you need to call, move to open high ground only if you can do it safely. A text may go through when a call won't.

What should I tell my Guardian?

Your trail system, parking spot, planned trails and finish time, and what to do if you're late. Point them to your last known location on the live link. More on cell dead zones.

What if I crash and can't ride out?

Check yourself for head, neck and collarbone injuries before moving. If you can walk, push the bike toward the trailhead on the main trail. If you can't, get warm, make yourself visible and try 911 from the highest open spot you can safely reach. Your overdue alert is what brings help if nothing connects.
